Plug-in City awarded honorable mention in Lahti

MUTOPIA´s proposal for retrofitting the central railway area in Lahti, Finland, receives an honorable mention at the Radanvarsi international competition, a major event during the Lahti World Design Capital.

The award praises the outstanding sustainable qualities of the proposal, including the possibilities for phased development, ecological lifestyles and innovative building typologies.

In 2012, Lahti is the World Design Capital together with the neighboring cities Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Helsinki.  The World Design Capital is an initiative of the ICSID, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which every second year recognizes one global city for its accomplishments in utilizing design as a tool to improve social, cultural and economic life.

In order to create an attractive urban environment, MUTOPIA proposes achieving a compact mix of living and working by capitalizing on the unique qualities of this beautiful site: great accessibility, unique topography and a rich industrial heritage.

The outcome is a tactical, flexible, contextual, car free, diverse, experimental, temporary, sustainable and optimistically inclusive Plug-in City.
