X-House tops out

Sunday, December 18th, 2016

X-House has reached its highest point, which was celebrated in a top-out ceremony last Friday.

MUTOPIA’s winning proposal for the adaptive reuse of a Danish shutdown school aims at creating a new focal area for the X-shaped building mass of the school complex by providing a generous multi-space which will create synergy between the different activities of each ‘arm’ of the X.

The X-House is a response to the desire for social innovation, and the requirement to strengthen the local community. It will provide a ‘public living room’ – a dynamic central meeting point featuring a floating orangery which will secure transparency and visual connections between the different functional areas, as well as a new identity for the shutdown school as a ‘social greenhouse’.

The project receives financial support from Lokale og Anlægsfonden (The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities), Realdania and Ken Fonden, The Municipality of Faaborg-Midtfyn, along with contributions from local citizens and companies.

The SPIRAL nears completion

Monday, December 12th, 2016

The opening date of The SPIRAL, MUTOPIA’s new house of movement, has been set for February the 4th, 2017.

The SPIRAL features a spectacular 4 stories high stepped common space which enables the organization of different activities separately, yet interconnected, as well as a horizontal wooden sticks façade which turns the building into an accessible topography inscribed in the surrounding hilly landscape.

The common space unites 4 different activity fields, each with its own size and room height, into an inspirational ‘sports theatre’ filled with daylight, which makes the different activities visible for each other, while providing 360 degree views of the city, neighbouring school, harbour and sea.

The key position of The SPIRAL – located at one of the highest summits of the city of Kalundborg – supports the city’s ambition to provide a sports&culture powerhouse in response to the emergent need for new forms of interaction and community, where sports culture acts as a catalyst for public life across age, performance level and interests.

Archdaily features MUTOPIA’s Village-in-the-Schoolyard for its double social agenda

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

Archdaily features MUTOPIA’s Village-in-the-Schoolyard for its double social agenda of providing attractive school premises and a social meeting place for the local community.

The urban renewal project, featuring several activity hotspots shaped like gabled houses evocative of the homely appeal of village life, aims at supporting the growth strategy of the Halsnæs Municipality by increasing the attractiveness of the school premises, while in the same time strengthening the qualities of the school grounds as areas for social training, outdoor activities and public life generators.

X-House cleared and ready to welcome the new transparent ‘public living-room’ addition

Tuesday, November 15th, 2016

The clearing of the centre of the X-House has been completed, and is now ready to welcome the new addition: a transparent ‘public living-room’.

The new multi-space with a generous 10m room height will become the focal area of the complex, providing synergy between the different activities of each ‘arm’ of the X.

MUTOPIA’s winning proposal for the adaptive reuse of a Danish shutdown school into a community centre is a strategic intervention at the very middle of the X-shaped building mass, aimed at providing the X-House with a dynamic central meeting point, and a new identity as a ‘social greenhouse’.
